Parish history

Sacré-Cœur Parish / Haute-Aboujagane

Established around 1820
First church : 1874
First priest : 1895

The word ‘Aboujagane’ is derived from the Micmac term ‘Naboushagan’ which means ravine or, others argue, ‘string of pearls’ to recall the First Nations who welcomed visitors with necklaces made of animal fangs or from grains.

The first settler in Haute-Aboujagane was Étienne LeBlanc who arrived from Saint Anselme in 1831. Other settlers from Memramcook soon followed. Around 1850, a small chapel was built at Kachibougouet (Cormier Village).

Construction of the first church was completed in 1874.

This mission was served by priests of the Holy Cross Congregation in Barachois and became a parish in 1895 when they welcomed their first resident priest.

This church was renovated in 1911 and again in 2003.
