Parish history

Saint-Paul Parish / Saint-Paul

Established in 1862
First church in 1868
First priest: 1883

Fr. Georges Belcourt, a missionary who had worked with native populations in Manitoba and Minnesota for 32 years, came to Prince Edward Island in 1850 to work in this colony. He heard of beautiful forested lands in Kent County. He helped Acadians take the necessary steps to acquire land in this area. Immigration to Saint Paul intensified from 1869 to 1870.

The first church was built in 1874 and became the sacristy in the new church which was built from 1891 to 1894.

This church was destroyed by fire on the night of January 29, 1925 but was immediately rebuilt.

For the centennial celebrations of this parish in 1983, several renovations were made to the church and rectory. It is the same church that we can still admire today.
