St-Henri Parish / Barachois


Established around: 1789 
First church : 1826
First priest : 1831


Settlers coming from Memramcook came to the region in 1789. A first chapel was built on what is now known as Cap Bimet Road.
 
Saint Henri church, now Barachois’ historical church, was built in 1826. Rev. Antoine Gagnon, vicar for the Bishop of Quebec, was the first resident priest as early as 1830.
 
From 1864 until 1892, the Holy Cross Fathers directed the parish and exercised their ministry there.
 
In 1974 a new church was built and still serves as a place of worship today. A pastoral centre was added in 2005 and serves as a parish office and catechesis centre.
 
The former church become a historical site and was entrusted to the ‘Société historique de la Mer Rouge’ historical society. It became a museum, theater and art gallery.
