Parish history

St. Charles Borromée Parish / Saint-Charles

Established around 1792
First church: 1821
First priest: 1874

Saint Charles Borromée parish was founded around 1800 at ‘Pointe de l’Aldouane ». The Little Aldouane site was abandoned in 1861 to divide the region into two sections, each having its own church; Richibouctou and the upper Aldouane river where the actual church still stands, as well as a second church.

This first magnificent church would go up in flames in 1922.

A second church would be built on the same site between 1922 and 1926.

Norbert Robichaud, born of this parish, is ordained as a priest in 1931: he would become the second archbishop of Moncton.

The parishioners of St Charles are very proud of their Church. This community can count on groups of willing people to get involved in the tasks of church cleaning, clearing the snow and maintaining the cemetery. The St Charles community lives out its faith in a day-to-day way and is always ready to lend a hand when challenges come along. The liturgies are prepared with care, and volunteers meet with the young people during Sunday Mass to explore the gospel together. The friendliness, the sense of welcome, the contact people for various projects and the participation of young and not-so-young in the Eucharist celebrations mean that we continue our journey to God.
